When Steve Platt passed away in February of 2021, former Huntington County resident Doug Ware felt a desire to help preserve his friend’s legacy in our community. Bonded by their passion for athletics and agriculture, Doug and Steve also agreed that academics played an important factor in success in life. Through these common beliefs, the Platt and Ware families recently came together to create the Steve Platt Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Huntington County Community Foundation.

“This scholarship is a way to preserve Steve’s memory and highlight outstanding students who embody the values Steve and I hold in high regard,” said Doug. With the initial gift made by Doug and his wife, Virginia, this endowed scholarship will now provide financial aid to students on an annual basis, forever, through the Community Foundation’s spring scholarship process.

The scholarship will be available to Huntington County residents who are graduating seniors from Huntington North High School and have earned a varsity letter in at least one IHSAA sport. The scholarship recipient will be chosen based on their academic history, financial need, service to their school and community, leadership qualities and work ethic.

“The Community Foundation is honored to partner with the Platt and Ware families on this new scholarship opportunity,” said Matt Ditzler, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. “We look forward to stewarding their family legacies forever.”

For anyone wishing to donate to the Steve Platt Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, checks may be made payable to the Huntington County Community Foundation, PO Box 5037, Huntington, IN 46750 with “Steve Platt Memorial” in the memo line. Donations are also being accepted online at www.huntingtonccf.org/steveplattmemorial
