How Can I Make A Difference?

We’re wrapping up another “Make a Difference” grant-giving cycle during our 30th year of grant-making at the Huntington County Community Foundation.   You’ve probably noticed in our press releases that our grants are sponsored by community funds.  What is a community fund and is it right for me?  We’re so glad you asked!

What is a community fund?

Let’s first define what we mean by the term “community fund”.  A community fund is a fund set up by an individual, family, or organization that provides resources for the Community Foundation to provide grant money towards the most significant needs and emerging opportunities for our area. These funds can be named after the founders or in memory of their loved ones.  Donors can even create an anonymous community fund or give it a title that doesn’t reveal their identity.

The principal of these funds remains at the Community Foundation.  The revenue they generate provides funding for grants given to charitable organizations that serve Huntington County.  These are considered “Unrestricted” Funds, meaning they provide the Community Foundation the flexibility to grant these dollars toward the ever-changing needs of Huntington County.  These dollars also help us make investments that improve the quality of life in our area.

Is a community fund right for me?

Are you passionate about giving to charitable organizations that are making a difference in Huntington County?  Do you like the idea of joining with others to make substantial contributions to endeavors that have a significant impact on improving the quality of life in our area?  Are you intrigued by the thought that your generosity today can become an investment in the generations to come, forever?  If so, keep reading!

There is a donation minimum to be able to have a named community fund.   This minimum does not have to be met in a single gift but can be built over time if desired.  Once the minimum is met, donors will have the opportunity to “sponsor” grants approved by our Grant Committee.  Donors can choose to have the name of their fund associated with specific grants that fit their interests.  Because these funds are endowed funds, they will live on forever and give continually.  If you’re interested in learning more about whether a community fund is right for you, please contact our Executive Director, Matt Ditzler.  He’d be happy to discuss this further and answer your questions.
